Tour Saturday Recap and Results
Shaun White of Carlsbad, Calif., flew to another
Skateboard Vert victory, while Jamie Bestwick, England,
continued his five event unbeaten streak in BMX Vert at
the AST Dew Tours first event of the season, the Panasonic
Open at Baltimores Camden Yards Sports Complex.
White,
an Olympic gold-medal winning snowboarder, scored a 94.25
on his first run in the best of three format to capture
the win. He demonstrated why he is the worlds most
recognized action sports athlete, completing technical
combinations and high-flying 720s in his winning run.
White has now won three of six tour events he has entered
during the last three years.
Today
was crazy, said White. Ive always had
dreams of making it this far. I just show up to do my
best and this is definitely the best crowd Ive seen
in a long time.
Placing
second was Brazils Bob Burnquist with a score
of 91.00, followed by Andy Macdonald of Boston,
Mass. with an 87.50. Baltimore native and hometown favorite
Bucky Lasek finished fourth with an 87.50, losing
the tiebreaker to Macdonald.
Getting
a good start is really important, Burnquist said.
You have to get your energy and adrenaline going.
Competing against skateboarders like White really makes
me step it up a level.
Bestwick,
who has won nine of 10 BMX Vert events he has entered
on the Dew Tour, continued his domination by scoring an
89.17 on his first run in the best of two format. Chad
Kagy of Gilroy, Calif., placed second with an 88.67,
followed by Jimmy Walker of Chicago with an 87.67.
This
trophy has been eluding me the last two years, but no
more, said Bestwick. What can I say, it shows
there are a number of great riders in BMX Vert.
BMX
Dirt competitor Stephen Murray of England was injured
Friday night while attempting a double backflip. Murray,
27, was immediately attended to by tour medical staff
and was taken by ambulance to University Hospital. He
underwent surgery Saturday and is in critical but stable
condition.
"Our
thoughts and prayers go out to Stephen Murray and his
family." said Wade Martin, president and general
manager of the AST Dew Tour.
The
four-day competition is the first of five events of the
AST Dew Tour that features skateboarding, BMX and freestyle
motocross. Sundays schedule includes Freestyle Motocross
and BMX Park finals.
